Description
John Gay. Rural Sports. A Poem Inscribed To Mr. Pope. London: Printed for J. Tonson, 1713.Folio (315 x 198 mm). Early 20th-century quarter morocco, gilt-lettered on spine.
FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest realistic pastorals. Unlike in the Rothschild copy, in this copy leaf [A]2 is signed "B" ("B2" in Rothschild). This copy belonged to Narcissus Luttrell who gathered an extensive collection of contemporary writing starting in the late 1670s until the time of his death. Luttrell's copies are of bibliographical importance since it was his custom to date his acquisitions often upon publication or very shortly afterwards. Foxon comments on the present copy "the Luttrell copy, dated 21 Jan, is recorded in Haslewood."
Condition: Some wear to spine ends; joints rubbed; upper corners of boards bent. Some light browning; occasional spotting.
