FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S RARE FIRST BOOK. Neihardt was born in Sharpsburg, Illinois and received his B. S. degree from a pioneer college in Wayne, Nebraska. He published his first book at the age of nineteen, while he was supporting himself by teaching in a country school. Written in 1897-98, The Divine Enchantment is a poetic rendering of a Hindu legend concerning the birth of Jeseus Christna. Neihardt, who would become the poet laureate of Nebraska, subsequently recalled most of the edition and had them burned. He is best-known for his book Black Elk Speaks (1932), in which Neihardt presents an extended narration of the visions of the Lakota medicine man Black Elk.

Condition: Cloth a little soiled and rubbed; internally quite clean.
