Description

Tom Lea. The Hands of Cantú. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1964.

8vo. Mounted color frontispiece plate and numerous illustrations by the author. Full crushed brown levant, top edge gilt, others uncut, silk ribbon page marker; publisher's cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 100 of 100 copies printed on fine Arches paper, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY LEA in his beautiful calligraphic hand on the limitation leaf bound before title: "Tom Lea / at El Paso del Norte / Day of San Miguel / anno Di 1964." Additionally, accompanied by a signed and dated print by Lea of his character, Young Lope, house in folder at front.

Lea's masterpiece is rarely offered for sale and was difficult to obtain even when it was first published. The publisher vastly oversubscribed this issue of the book, and was forced to distribute copies via a lottery system incurring the wrath of collectors and dealers who had prepaid their orders. A beautiful deluxe limited signed copy of this cornerstone for any collector of Southwestern literature.

Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.
