Adolf Steiler's Magnificent Hand-Atlas with 83 Hand-Colored or Chromolithographed Maps
[Atlas]. Adolf Steiler. Hand-Atlas Über Alle Theile
der Erde nach dem neuesten Zustande und Über das
Weltgebäude. Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1859-1860. Probable
third edition. Oblong folio. 14.25 x 17.25 inches. [ii] pages.
Complete with eighty-three hand-colored maps (two celestial maps
are chromolithographed). With publisher's twenty-two page
pamphlet of captions and legends laid-in. Bound in modern quarter
black cloth backstrip over marbled boards, original title from
original cloth affixed to front board. Title leaf mounted and
repaired, two maps with major repairs, several other maps with
smaller marginal repairs or some creasing. Some toning,
thumbsoiling throughout. Pamphlet bound into modern plain wrappers.
Still, a very good atlas with handsome and highly detailed
maps."Hand-Atlases" were the most popular German world atlases of the nineteenth- and twentieth-centuries, and were in constant publication from 1817 until 1944, going through ten editions (each successive edition would have more maps than the previous one). Adolf Steiler (1775-1836) was the first editor of this atlas, and the series was still published under his name even after his death. Although many publishers had moved exclusively to chromolithography by the time the present edition was published, "Hand-Atlases" were still being reproduced, for the most part, with copperplate engravings and hand-coloring (they wouldn't change to chromolithography exclusively until the 1890's). The publisher, Justus Perthes of Gotha was founded in 1785 and is still in business today.
