Description

One of Ford's rarest plays

[John Ford]. The Broken Heart. A Tragedy. London: Printed by J[ohn]. B[eale]. for Hugh Beeston, 1633.

Small 4to. Woodcut initials and headpieces. 19th-century vellum; morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION of one of the rarest of Ford's plays. The title page states the play was acted by the "King's Majesties Servants at the private House in the Black-Friers" (Blackfriars Theatre). The title contains the motto "Fide Honor," an anagram for "John Forde," which Ford employs in other of his plays as well. The Broken Heart has vied with 'Tis Pity She's a Whore as Ford's greatest work.

EXTREMELY RARE: According to online auction records only four complete copies, including the Huth, Houghton, and Martin copies, have appeared at auction since 1975.

Condition: Vellum a bit soiled. Lacking initial blank; preliminaries apparently supplied from another copy; title-page soiled, with lower fore-margin repaired (just touching a letter of imprint); title with a few internal tears or small holes skillfully repaired; following leaf (A2) soiled, with some small gutter margin repairs (slightly touching a few letters), and worn thin in one spot of text; final leaf soiled and with marginal repairs (affecting one letter of a printed character cue and verse numbers); a few other small marginal repairs or flaws.
