Description
David G. Burnet Document Signed as the state of Texas' first secretary of state. Two and one-half pages, 8" x 12.5", March 7, 1847, Austin, Texas. This is a handwritten copy of an act entitled "An Act To Regulate Interest", which was originally passed by the Republic of Texas on January 18, 1840. The act, the first passed by the Republic of Texas on the subject of interest, was never repealed or amended and was, according to this document, "now the law of the state of Texas." Burnet's bold signature lies next to a paper embossed state seal of Texas.Burnet had served Texas as ad interim president, vice president under Mirabeau Lamar, and Texas' first secretary of state from 1846 through 1847. He was often out of step with the Texas public and antagonistic towards Sam Houston. This "true copy" has folds and is in fine condition.
