Stephen Spender (1909-1995) was a renowned poet, critic, and friend of T. S. Eliot. Eliot, who worked for the publishing house Faber & Faber for forty years, was responsible for publishing many important English poets, among them Spender. In response to a request for a copy of The Family Reunion, in a letter to Spender dated 24 January 1939, Eliot assured Spender, "You shall certainly have a copy of the play as soon as one is available..." The present copy of the play is undoubtedly the copy to which Eliot refers.
