Description

William Cullen Bryant. Hymns. [New York: Privately Printed, 1864].

12mo, original brick-colored cloth, covers paneled in blind, gilt-lettered on upper cover, white moiré endpapers; morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION, variant (second issue?) with the reading "Dwells" in the second line in the fourth stanza on page 9. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front flyleaf: "Wm. C. Bryant / Sept. 2d 1864." Additionally with imprint added by him on the title-page, "New York 1864." A fine copy of this privately printed work, believed to be one of a small number issued for distribution among the author's friends. BAL's binding A (presumed first binding for presentation). It was reissued in a revised edition in 1869; BAL identifies the first edition by the listing of "Hymn IX" in the Contents list as "I Will Send Them Prophets and Apostles" (as here).

Condition: Minor rubbing to extremities; lightly soiled; moiré endpapers somewhat discolored.

References: BAL 1686.

Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.
