One of the Earliest Oregon Trail Narratives
Overton Johnson and William H. Winter. Route Across
the Rocky Mountains, With a Description of Oregon and
California; Their Geographical Features, Their Resources, Soil,
Climate, Productions, &c., &c. Lafayette (Indiana):
John B. Semans, Printer, 1846. First edition, second issue, with
none of the first issue points as referenced in Wagner-Camp or
Graff. Octavo. [i-iii], vi-v, [vi blank], [vii], viii, [9]-152
pages. Complete. Original boards lacking cloth binding, blue cloth
on spine still partially present, yet are covered by later cloth
tape. Binding quite worn and soiled, text block detached from
binding, front and rear free endpapers loose and soiled, yet
present. Second front blank and title-page suffering with animal
depredation, with loss of one word ("Mountains") on title-page,
marginal animal depredation and damage to text near fore-edge, with
damage being worst near the last quarter of the book (no loss of
text). Text foxed and dampstained. Contemporary ink signature of
Marcus Renfro on rear free endpaper, pencil signature of John
Renfro on rear pastedown. Fair, sold as is.One of the early overland narratives and one of the earliest guidebooks to the overland route, printed in a very small edition on a newspaper press in Lafayette, Indiana. The first forty pages are devoted to the 1843 overland journey from Independence, Missouri to Oregon, with the rest comprising descriptions of Oregon and Alta California; there is also an appendix with instructions to emigrants including a seven-page table labeled "Bill of the Route" giving both point to point and accumulative mileage and brief descriptions of the trail. Among the many details he mentions that gold was discovered in the Pueblo Valley, and the production of wine. "Describes the 1843 Oregon migration, the Oregon region and California.
