Chardin's Early Accounts of Travel in the
Near East

Jean-Baptiste Chardin (Also known as Sir John Chardin). Journal du voyage du Chevalier Chardin en Perse et aux Indes Orientales, par la Mer Noire & par la Colchide. Premiere partie [all published], qui contient le voyage de Paris à Ispahan. Amsterdam: Chez Abraham Wolfgangh, 1686. Second edition with revisions and corrections. Twelvemo. [20, including frontispiece and added engraved title], 496, [8, index] pages. Eighteen wood engravings including an additional engraved title, frontispiece portrait of the author, and sixteen folding maps and plates, as called for. Contemporary vellum with fore-edge extensions. An internally bright, clean and tight copy with a few small tears on the title page. The vellum covers display the usual spotting and soiling, though they are undamaged and in very good condition. Sir John Chardin (1643-1712) made his journeys to the East between 1664-1669 and 1671-1677. and acquired considerable wealth as agent for the purchase of jewels to Shah Solyman III. Driven from France by the persecution of Protestants, he was well received in London and soon appointed court jeweler. "Montesquieu, Rousseau, Gibbon, and Helvetius acknowledge the value of his writings; and Sir William Jones says he gave the best account of Mahometan nations ever published. Extracts from his works appear in all the chief collections of travels, but there is no complete English translation" (D.N.B.). Wing C2041.
