Thomas Carew. Poems. London: I[ohn]. D[awson]. for
Thomas Walkley, 1640.8vo (148 x 92 mm). With six-line errata on A2; leaf G7 uncancelled; separate title for the Coelum Brittanicum. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION, with the earlier state of the errata on A2 recto with six lines, and leaf G7 uncancelled. Loosely inserted in the present copy is the G7 cancellans from another copy, containing the omitted line in the fourth line of the "Epitaph on the Lady S." Carew's most famous work, Coelum Brittanicum, was first performed with designs by Inigo Jones at the court of Charles I in 1633. "This attractive collection appears to be rarer than is generally supposed, certainly rarer than either Lucasta or Hesperides, both uncommon books" (Hayward).
VERY RARE: One of only five known copies with leaf G7 uncancelled.
Condition: Joints and spine ends rubbed; upper cover with a few scraps or minor holes. Hinges cracked, but holding. Leaf G7 slit for cancellation with a few mends; catchword on C5 partially punched through from printing; a few catchwords just shaved; some later marbling to edges bleeding slightly on to lower margin extremes. A very fresh, crisp copy in contemporary binding.
