Hundreds of Beautiful Illustrations of California
from the Ninetenth Century
John Muir, editor. Picturesque California,
Volumes I and II. San Francisco and New York: The J. Dewing
Company, 1888. "Containing over six hundred beautiful etchings,
photo-gravures, wood engravings, etc. by eminent American
artists."Two large folio volumes. One hundred- twenty illustrated plates with captioned tissue guards and numerous in text illustrations. xii-240; 241-478 pages. Both bound in half leather and cloth with gilt rules to covers, five raised spine bands with gilt rules, title, and volume number. Boards rubbed, spines rubbed at bands and extremities, shelf wear, corner bumps; pages and plates dampstained throughout both volumes mostly in margins and borders, occasional smudges and stains. Volume I - The Region West of the Rocky Mountains, from Alaska to Mexico: Tear with paper lifts on page one, minor paper loss and lifts in margins of Table of Contents, List of Plates, pages 237 and 239. Volume II - The Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Slope: small tear to spine, rear hinge split before endpapers, staining and rippling to title page and frontispiece, many pages stuck together from dampstains at margins, paper loss and lifts in margins with occasional minor loss to text, not affecting plates. Overall a good set of books with beautiful illustrated plates of California from the nineteenth century.
