Description

William Gordon. The History of the Rise, Progress, and Establishment of the Independence of the United States of America: Including an Account of the Late War; and of the Thirteen Colonies, from their Origin to that Period. London: Printed for the Author, 1788. First edition. Four volumes. Octavo. [26], 504; [8], 584; [8], 499; [8], 445, [1, blank], 17 leaves (Index) pages. Printer's blue paper covered boards, printed paper spine labels. Pages uncut and untrimmed. Complete with nine folding maps (Sabin incorrectly calling for eight maps and five plates). Each volume housed in brown cloth slipcase backed in brown morocco with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, chemise.

"Gordon is deservedly reckoned as one of the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution" (Sabin).

Remarkable survivor, uncut in the original boards, with all nine plates.

Condition: Blue paper covered boards faded with scattered stains, corners rubbed, other edgewear. Some foxing to textblock, a few minor tears with expert repair margin of final leaf in volume I, not affecting text. Front board of volume I almost entirely detached, but holding, spine perished. Volume I map frontispiece with small tear along old fold, just touching map. Volume III spine beginning to perish. Very good.
