Description

W. H. Auden; and Christopher Isherwood. The Ascent of F6. A tragedy in two acts. London: Faber & Faber, Limited, [September 1936].

8vo. Original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; publisher's illustrated dust jacket.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY ISHERWOOD TO HIS MOTHER on the front free endpaper: "For Mummy / with many happy returns / of the day, / from Christopher / October 7. 1936." ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY AUDEN on the half-title verso facing title: "With best wishes / Wystan Auden." The Ascent of F6 was the second and most successful play in the Auden-Isherwood collaboration. It was a major contribution to English poetic drama in the 1930s, and has been seen as a parable about will, leadership and the nature of power. A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY BOTH AUTHORS.

Condition: Slight rubbing to extremities; a little discoloration to endpapers at gutters, with very minor pale spotting to endpapers. Dust jacket decoratively clipped, retaining price (priced "6s. net"), front panel with large chip on front panel affecting the last letter of title, and long horizontal tear across Isherwood's name; some other small chips and edgewear; rear panel a little soiled.
