[Texas Rangers]. J. A. Brooks and Frontier Battalion Boudoir Card, circa 1890s. 7.25" x 4.75". In this group photograph is Texas Ranger Company "F" Frontier Battalion Captain J. A. Brooks with a dozen mounted Frontier Battalion Texas Rangers. The photograph is inaccurately labeled "Texas Cowboys" on recto. A variant of this photograph in the Library of Congress correctly identifies the men as Texas Rangers. Furthermore, an engraving of the photograph that appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1892 identifies the subjects more specifically as Captain Brooks and Texas Rangers. Backstamped "Picturesque San Antonio / Published by M. E. Jacobson. No. 2 E. Houston St., San Antonio, Texas." Also included in the backstamp is a lengthy and colorful description of the people of and lifestyle in San Antonio. Very slight wear to edges of card.J. A. Brooks is considered one of the "Four Great Captains" of the Texas Rangers, along with John R. Hughes, John H. Rogers, and William J. McDonald. In 1883, Brooks, unemployed and broke, joined the Texas Rangers at the age of twenty-eight and quickly rose to the rank of captain in 1889. After company reorganization in the 1890s, he became captain of Company "A." Brooks and his Rangers patrolled almost the entire state, controlling violent crime, stopping prize fights, and, late in his career, patrolling new oil-boom towns. He was also involved in several shootouts with "fence-cutters" in East Texas. During one shootout with the Conner Gang of east Texas, one Ranger was killed and three others, including Brooks, wounded. As a result, he gained a reputation among criminals and Rangers alike as a Ranger to be feared. (There is disagreement over Brooks' full name. The J. A. stands for either John Abijah or James Abijah.)
