From the Fitterer Family Collection
Northern Plains or Woodlands Dag Knife with Antler Handle, Possibly Plains Cree/ Ojibwa, Circa Mid-Nineteenth Century. The shaped moose or elk antler grip held with antler (?) pins, with integral lanyard ring at the pommel, attached to a fan-shaped antler section which in turn is pinned to the early 19th Century iron dag blade. A very fine, early example. Length 11.75". This knife comes with a letter of analysis and attribution from Beth Carter, Ethnology Curator for the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta, March 11, 2002.Provenance: Collected by Brent Barbeau near Macklin, Saskatchewan; Passed to Iowa dealer, then to Tom Hampton (Hampton Historicals, Michigan); Purchased by David Roth, San Diego, California; Sherwood's, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
