Description

Jesse James: An Extremely Rare and Important St. Joseph, Missouri Newspaper Supplement Devoted to the Slain Outlaw. A special Sunday supplement of the Daily Gazette of April 9, 1882. The entire four-page paper is devoted to an account of James' funeral and discussion in detail of the events surrounding his killing by Robert Ford. Content also includes impact of the event on the community, people's personal reactions, etc. Highlights of James' career are presented, as well as such fascinating tidbits as a report on the efforts of a wealthy Kansas City man to purchase Jesse's body from his mother for a "large sum" ("She indignantly rejected the blood money").

The newspaper is in very nice condition. The paper is evenly toned to a light tan shade, and there is very slight deterioration along the original quarter-fold creases, as would be expected. It measures 14.5" x 20.5" and is housed in a gorgeous custom slipcase which undoubtedly cost hundreds of dollars.

We have not been able to find any record of this supplement at auction. All local newspapers including coverage of James' murder are avidly collected. However, this special edition devoted entirely to the subject is a special example indeed.
