Description

Zerelda James: A Scarce Carte de Visite Photo Along with a Handwritten Letter. A great image of Jesse and Frank's mother, clearly showing her empty right sleeve (Zerelda had lost her arm in the 1875 bombing of the James farmhouse by Pinkerton detectives). On the verso is the logo of Schwartz, a Kansas City photographer. Moderate corner wear and a fine tack hole in each corner, overall very good condition. What might be interpreted as damage in the upper left-hand corner is as made.

This lot also includes a rare handwritten letter, written in 1908 on the stationery of Samuel & Dressler, a family-owned Kansas City grocery concern. She was 84 at the time and would pass away two years later. The content is of a mundane nature, but nonetheless an important letter. It is clearly separated along one horizontal fold line, and there are several trivial small edge tears. "Z. Samuel" signature is bold and clear. Small brown stain just below signature. The letter measures 6" x 6.75".
