Description
John Bull: Four Civil War Era Cartoons Depicting The Consequences of Emancipation On Great Britain. Four poignant and prognostic political cartoons predicting the consequences of emancipation on the cotton trade between the Confederate States of America and Great Britain. In one of these, John Bull is depicted reeling backwards in surprise as an African American bursts from a bale of cotton. The African American raises his hands as the chains on his wrists are broken and he yells at John Bull, "No more cotton". Three other cartoons send similar dire predictions for Great Britain and the cotton trade resulting from the civil war. Sizes vary from 11" x 13.75" to 13.5" x 17".Condition: A cartoon titled "The Ghost." has scattered mild foxing to the margins. The smallest titled "John Bull's Jack." is linen backed. Otherwise these four cartoons are all in extra fine condition.
