Description

Civil War: Dramatic "Death To Traitors" Cartoon. This cartoon expresses in a literal manner the explosiveness of secession and its direct impact on dragging America into civil war. The cartoon titled, "Secession Exploded," is dated 1861 with an uncredited artist. It captures the feelings of contempt very well. The monster, "Secession" is blasted to pieces by a cannon labeled "Death to Traitors." Smaller demons each labeled as a Confederate State are flying out of the destroyed sea monster. South Carolina the first state to secede from the Union, is drawn as a large coffin flying through the air. Meanwhile a bald eagle rests with Union commander Winfield Scott on the American flag watching as the monster is vanquished. A compelling and provocative piece!

Condition: Measures 12.5" x 18", linen backed, excellent condition.
