Description

Civil War: Cartoon Titled, "The Question Settled". Who can resist this adorable allegorical depiction of the cause and effect of the Civil War! A 10" x 14" hand-colored lithograph by Kellogg portrays Lincoln as a white cat labeled "Old Abe", while a black cat labeled "Contraband" has one paw in the "Union" pan and another on the state of Alabama depicted on a map of southern states. A gray cat labeled "Jeff" is being forced out of the pan. Purportedly, the cartoon is meant to reference the confederate warship, Alabama which took twenty-seven Union ships as prizes before being sunk by the Kearsarge in June of 1864.

Condition: Moderate toning, dampstains, but no tears and nice margins, overall fine condition.
