Description
Jimmy Durante: Autograph Letter Signed to John F. Kennedy. Two pages with accompanying transmittal cover, 7.25" x 10.5", no place; no date. A letter congratulating Kennedy's presidential nomination at the Democratic Convention, reading, in part, "A little late but congratulations. You were stupendous and your organization was colossal. While watching you at the Coliseum I couldn't help but go back to Feb 19 -59 in Boston at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner when I grabbed your hair. It was wonderful, how gracious you were and taking it in the spirit of innocent fun." Signed, "Jimmy Durante." Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Kennedy's personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offering further contextualization.According to Lincoln, the actor-comedian and Kennedy "were very good friends. In fact, Durante entertained at various Kennedy functions. One was in New York while Kennedy was President." Kennedy won the Democratic presidential nomination on July 13, 1960, with 53 percent of the votes ahead of Lyndon B. Johnson's 26.89 percent.
Condition: Creased along folds and toned throughout. Staple holes to the upper left corner of each page. There is a printed caricature drawing of Durante in the upper left corner of the first page.
