Description

Stephen A. Douglas: Cased Ambrotype. Attractively housed in a gutta-percha case featuring a floral motif, this ninth plate ambrotype measures 2" x 2 ½" with an overall case size of 2 ½" x 3". This image was likely copied from a lithograph that was copied from an 1854 daguerreotype portrait. A large bust fills up most of the oval mat opening, and the ornate frame possesses plenty of shine. Opposite the image is a plum-colored velvet cushion with a scrollwork design at the center. Some very minor discoloration can be seen at six o'clock across his suit. In overall great condition, this would make a very nice display piece. From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
