Description

Jacqueline Kennedy: "Self-Portrait" Family Sketch. 8" x 5" unsigned ink sketch on "White House Washington" note paper. It shows President John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, Caroline and John, Jr. riding a one-horse buggy. Vertical fold with added notation, in unknown hand, in red ink "JBK 62". Jacqueline was introduced to horses and riding at a young age, competing at New York horse shows. This love of animals continued into her White House years. Vice-President Johnson gifted Caroline a pony named Macaroni and Pakistani Governor Ayub Khan gifted Jackie a horse named Sardar, which she nicknamed "Black Jack" after her father. Black Jack was the ceremonial rider-less horse during JFK's funeral. Though JFK was allergic to animal hair of any kind, he indulged his family by maintaining a veritable White House menagerie. The horses were stabled at nearby farms and trucked into Washington for special occasions. The sketch is accompanied by three copies of Cecil Stoughton photographs from February 1962 showing Jackie taking children for a sleigh ride in the snow outside the White House, five period snapshots of Caroline riding Macaroni out in the country in the Summer of '62 (dressed in an exotic costume in three of the images) and an August 13, 1962 letter from White House housekeeper Anne Lincoln to Jackie's mother, discussing transportation for Macaroni and "Sagebrush" as well as staffing arrangements.
