Description
Dwight D. Eisenhower: Typed Letter Signed. One page on personalized letterhead, 7.25" x 10.5", Indio, California; January 31, 1968. Addressed to Eisenhower's friend and former Secretary of Commerce, Lewis Strauss. The letter reads, in part, "Thank you very much for your letter of January 23. It brought me information that I needed, particularly about the 15,000 military men sent to Viet Nam in 1961. I had heard about Senator Baker's difficulty in trying to represent his father-in-law at the Alfalfa Club. My informants said that he was rather pathetic. Too bad, because I like the boy very much... Mamie seems well and I think I am slowly regaining my strength. Both of us send affectionate regards to you and Alice and, of course, best wishes for your continued health and happiness." Signed, "Ike" with a handwritten postscript that reads, "P.S. I think Ben Hibbs will soon be seeking an interview with you about the Mid-East water plan."The letter here refers to information secured by Strauss for Eisenhower regarding the Kennedy administration's escalation of the conflict in Vietnam ahead of the 1968 presidential election. The former president's reference to Senator Howard Baker corresponds to the Washington Alfalfa Club's custom of jokingly choosing their own presidential candidate. That year, they nominated Baker's father-in-law, Everett Dirksen, who was staying at Walter Reed Hospital and unable to attend the gathering. Baker gave Dirksen's speech in his stead and, as mentioned above, did a poor job. A rare example of an informally signed letter from Eisenhower with an extensive postscript. Eisenhower's postscript refers to America's strategy to develop relations with the Middle East by promoting water development and desalination plants in the region.
Condition: Creased along folds and lightly toned, more so along the margins. Pencil notations to the upper left and right corners recto.
