Description
[Civil Rights Movement] Pair of Posters, One Featuring Julian Bond and the Other Ruchell Magee. (1) Known as a civil rights movement leader, Bond helped establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and served as the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. He was elected to four terms in the Georgia House of Representatives and to six terms in the Georgia State Senate. He also served as chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). This 14" x 22" poster advertises the opportunity to hear Julian Bond on October 6, 1968, the year he was nominated for vice president at the Democratic National Convention. Toning is present throughout, with minor dampstaining at the top edge and corners. A dark fingerprint smudge is to the left of the "J," along with some minor loss and scratching at the left edge. The center of the top edge and the upper-left corner have some tearing and minimal loss. A trail of ink can be seen at the end of "Julian" and is assumed to be as made. Overall great condition. (2) There are still petitions to be found requesting the release of Ruchell "Cinque" Magee. It is debated that he was unjustly sentenced to prison for a false charge of attempted kidnapping during a robbery. In 1970, fifteen years after Magee's sentencing, he joined an escape attempt at the Marin County Courthouse, where guards fired into the getaway van, killing all but Magee and a hostage. This poster features Magee in prison shackles with the text "Free Ruchell Magee" and "It's Right to Rebel." The approximately 11.5" x 23" poster advertises a demonstration at San Quentin's east gate on "Feb. 8 Sat. at 1 PM," with carpool information appearing to be handwritten in marker. Light toning, soiling, and staining throughout, with the poster exhibiting some warping. A small area of loss is near the upper-left corner, and a couple of tears and a fold mark can be seen at the upper-right corner. A couple of tiny pinholes are at the center of the top edge. In overall great condition, the text and image are both quite bold.Auction Info
