Description

Andrew Jackson: The Political Barnyard Cartoon. President Jackson's opposition to the United States Bank and his relationship with the press are the topics dealt with in "'Let Every One Take Care of Himself' (As the Jack ass said when he was dancing among the Chickens)." The U.S. Bank hen tries to defend the flock of "Branch Bank" chicks against Andrew Jackson, the jackass, and Martin Van Buren, the fox. Francis Blair, the editor of the Globe, is depicted as a pig wallowing in a dung hill of lies. Five members of the "chained" press sing the praises of ass Jackson who exclaims to rooster Jack Downing: "Sing away Major Downing. This is a capital Experiment by the Eternal!" It measures 18.625" x 13.375" (19.625" x 14.5" overall with backing) and was drawn by Esop, Jr. and published by Imbert's Caricature Store in New York.

Condition: Mounted to a paper backing. Light toning, staining, and soiling are present throughout. Minor tearing and loss are at the cartoon's edges. The backing is warped and has tape on the back at the top corners. Considering its age, this cartoon is in overall good condition.
