John F. Kennedy: Rare "Give The Key To Kennedy" Button. In our September 2021 Americana & Political Signature Auction, we offered a rare "Democracy For Jack Kennedy" button, which brought $28,750, stating that it was one example from a set of Kennedy buttons known as "The Big Four." We alluded to a story of how the button had been made by longtime friend of the Kennedy family, Frank Allen, his intention being to create a set of campaign buttons that would stand out among the scores of others made for the 1960 campaign. As pointed out by Kennedy specialist Harvey Goldberg in his 1990 updated reference on JFK material: Allen brought all four sample buttons up to Hyannis, Ma. to show them to Kennedy patriarch, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. When Kennedy saw the buttons, he became quite angry. He is said to have stated, "My son is going to be the next President of the United States! You can't use ugly pictures like this!" He was likely referring to the "I'm Gone for John" button. He also found the "Jack Kennedy" on the Democracy button objectionable, stating, "Nobody calls the next President Jack-except his family!" It is said Kennedy threw the buttons across the room, saying he never wanted to see them again.Heritage feels especially privileged to offer the other three buttons in the "Big Four" set in this sale! The "I'm Gone For John" and "It Seems To Me It's Kennedy" can be found separately in this catalog. This auction features a "Give The Key To Kennedy" button. It measures 3 1/2" with the black and white profile of Kennedy facing left, the White House appearing in the background. It is in excellent condition. As pointed out previously, this button, and the other two for sale in this auction, were made in limited quantities, no doubt due to the response they evoked from an offended Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. when shown them for his approval. This sale presents an extraordinary opportunity to own three of the very best John F. Kennedy buttons known!
