Description

Ronald Reagan: White House Christmas Card Signed with Documentation. 1987 White House Christmas card bearing an autograph note signed by the President to Sgt. Shelson. Shelson received a surprise Christmas card from his Commander-in-chief. It reads: "Dear Sgt. Shelson, Your latest recruit delivered your greeting & your card to me last evening (Thurs). Thank you very much and have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Sincerely, Ronald Reagan."

Sgt. Shelson's newest recruit was a young man named Alec Bierbauer. Bierbauer was the son of Charles Bierbauer, who served as CNN's Pentagon Correspondent (1981-1984) and senior White House correspondent (1984-1993) during the Reagan and Bush administrations. One of the privileges of the press was to be invited to the White House Press Corps Christmas party. As a Senior correspondent, Charles Bierbauer was able to bring his son, Alec.

Alec Bierbauer planned to join the army. In his interview with Sgt. Shelson, the new recruit stated he would be attending a Christmas party at the White House with his parents. In an impulsive gesture, the Sergeant gave "the latest recruit" his business card to give to the President, never thinking it would happen. Upon meeting President Reagan, Alec remembered to give him Sgt. Shelson's card, explaining he had recently joined the army. They shared a photograph as the President put the business card in his pocket.

A few days later, Sgt. Shelson was surprised to receive a Christmas card from his Commander-in-chief. News of this notorious Christmas card from the President rippled throughout the Army recruiting circle and finally was published in the U.S. Army Recruiter Journal on February 26, 1988.

Includes the original White House envelope addressed in the President's hand.

Accompanied by a wealth of documentation concerning Sgt. Shelson's 1987 Christmas card.
