Description
Theodore Roosevelt: 1904 Illinois Charles Deneen Coattail Multigate Poster. This huge and impressive campaign poster by D. H. Dean of Chicago is the only example we've ever seen and is an unusual composition of various personalities and devices. Clearly a preeminent 1904 campaign poster for Theodore Roosevelt and Charles Fairbanks who appear front and center with large photo-quality images, featured below in similarly large portrayal is Illinois Republican stalwart Charles Deneen, "For Governor" is inscribed below, with slogan at the bottom, "Peace On Earth Good Will Towards All Men". Above the central figures are portraits of Martha Washington and Grandma Lincoln, between them an eagle flies grasping Old Glory on a flagstaff with "E Pluribus Unum" inscribed beneath. Flanking Deneen above right is a Full Dinner Pail with "Prosperity, That's It". On the left what may be the most compelling device used in this unusual theme is a drawing of a lighted chandelier surrounded by the slogan, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall". Above the chandelier is the drawing of a well known but seldom seen 1904 campaign button featuring the slogan, "Our Candidate", TR is pictured flanked by a Labor worker and Business owner with slogan, "Justice To All". Figures of Grandma Fairbanks and Grandma McKinley anchor the bottom corners of the poster.Condition: The poster measures 27 1/2" x 41" (sight) in custom wood frame to an overall dimension of 33 1/2" x 47 1/2". The poster has a somewhat mottled appearance which seems to resolve itself in an overall brownish-tan background color. A thin vertical 8" long tear from the top edge through the eagle design with a smaller 3" vertical tear from the top edge to the right of Martha, another diagonal tear appears horizontally through Martha Washington. The poster may have received some restorative preservation, however, it has not been examined out of the frame.
