Description

[War of 1812] "Johnny Bull and the Alexandrians" Cartoon. The engraving is matted to an overall size of 19.75" x 16", with the cartoon measuring 16.75" x 11.125". It ridicules the seeming lack of courage by the citizens of Alexandria, who easily capitulated to the British fleet. As part of the terms of surrender, John Bull confiscates all their provisions, ships, and merchandise but qualifies his demands with "...every thing except your Porter and Perry. keep them out of my sight. I've had enough of them already." One sailor exclaims: "Push on Jack, the yankeys are not all so Cowardly as these Fellows here - let's make the best of our time." On the heels of this seeming victory, the British fleet was defeated at Fort McHenry in Baltimore where their General Ross was killed by a rifleman.

Condition: Minor toning and soiling, with a brown stain on the right side. Light tearing and loss at the edges do not affect the cartoon's imagery. Secured to the mat at the top edge with tape. In fine condition.
