Description

Margaret Thatcher: Personally owned Skirt Suit. Margaret Thatcher, was a British stateswoman who served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold that office. A Soviet journalist dubbed her "The Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies known as Thatcherism. The personally owned skirt suit dates from the 1980s, and likely worn by the Prime Minister while in office. The smart navy blue cashmere suit by Francois Neckar Couture of London is nicely accented with silk stitching on the jacket, and two pleats on the calf-length skirt. Accompanied by red Mount Vernon silk scarf. No size listed, but approximate medium-large. A well appointed suit, in very good plus condition.

Provenance: May 2019 Mrs. Margaret Thatcher Sale at Christies Auction.
