Description

Abraham Lincoln: Classic 1860 Currier & Ives Cartoon. This is one of the better efforts by Currier & Ives, as it contains three sets of jugate portraits, as well as train and Indian imagery. This 11.25" x 17.75" cartoon was published in 1860, titled "Progressive Democracy-Prospect of a Smash Up," it depicts the schism in the Democratic Party. A carriage being driven by a Tammany brave ("A Squatter Sovereign") and President Buchanan ("Old Buck") is stuck on the railroad tracks, since the two sets of Democratic horses, Douglas & Johnson and Breckinridge & Lane, are pulling in opposite directions. Lincoln and Hamlin are riding the "Equal Rights" train and are ringing the bell as a warning to the stranded Democrats. The piece has been professionally cleaned and backed and is ready for framing!
