Description

Abraham Lincoln: "The Irrepressible Conflict," An Early 1860 Post Chicago Republican Convention Cartoon. Illustrates the great divide in the Republican party after the nomination of Lincoln and the defeat of William Seward as the Republican nominee at the Chicago Wigwam. This cartoon features Seward being thrown overboard with Lincoln at the helm confidently stating, "I'll take the helm. I've steered a flatboat before." Horace Greeley throws Seward overboard with assist from Edward Bates of Missouri, who would go on to serve in Lincoln's cabinet. Brother Jonathan (later emulated by Uncle Sam) looks on from shore, encouraging the crew to save Seward and instead suggests a different party to toss out of the boat! The idea of an "irrepressible conflict" was taken from Seward's famous 1858 speech against slavery. The cartoon measures 18" x 13.5" and is evenly toned. Has remnants of old mounting tape at extreme top left and right corner edges on verso, not affecting appearance from the front, an issue considered by us to be inconsequential. The print is otherwise in very good condition. An extremely scarce and desirable early 1860 campaign cartoon!
