Description

John F. Kennedy: Cuban Missile Crisis Tiffany Calendar Presented to Brig. Gen. Godfrey T. McHugh. 4 1/2" x 3 3/4", Sterling silver calendar made by Tiffany & Company, mounted on wood. Among the most notable of gifts given by JFK to his staff were the handful of these Tiffany calendars made to depict the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. This one has the initials of the recipient, Brig. Gen. Godfrey T. McHugh ("G.T. MH") inscribed to the left of Kennedy's initials ("J.F.K.") at top.

Brigadier General Godfrey T. McHugh was among Kennedy's most trusted advisors and served as U.S. Air Force aide to the President. A close confidant, McHugh was responsible for overseeing the logistical aspects of Kennedy's travels, particularly concerning the use of Air Force One. He was a crucial member of Kennedy's inner circle, providing advice on military matters and national security. McHugh's presence during key moments, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and Kennedy's tragic assassination in 1963, further highlights his importance. He accompanied Kennedy on his fateful trip to Dallas and was aboard Air Force One during the swearing-in of Lyndon B. Johnson as president.

The verso of the calendar has a typed label that reads: "On October 16, 1962, irrefutable evidence of Soviet missiles in Cuba was obtained by the U.S. Air Force. On October 28, Soviet Premier Krushchev (sic) was forced to agree to withdraw these offensive weapons. President Kennedy presented this silver calendar to his Air Force Aid, Brigadier General Godfrey T. McHugh, one of the men who helped him end the 13-day crisis."

These calendars rarely come to market as they were cherished not only by the recipient, but by their families as well. It should be noted that Heritage sold the Tiffany calendar presented to Evelyn Lincoln, in November 2013 for $30,000.

Condition: Fine condition. Light wear to the wood base from normal handling as expected.
