Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: Indiana Merchant Joseph H. Defrees Satiric Emancipation Proclamation Broadside. One printed page on blue salmon paper, 5 1/2" x 12 3/8"; Goshen, [Indiana]; April 7, 1864. Printed by the Democrat Print, this satiric broadside (like others printed by DeFrees for his dry good store between 1863 and 1864), was designed to cast aspersions on the Emancipation Proclamation. As an advertising gimmick, DeFrees uses the language of war to voice allegations against his competitors, with additional comparative advertising, to bring in more buyers to his store.

Condition: Excellent with minor toning to the outer margins.
