Description

[Abraham Lincoln Assassination] John T. Ford Telegram Referencing Closure of Ford's Theatre. 5" x 8" printed & manuscript document on pre-printed "American Telegraph Company" form, no doubt clerically inscribed, Baltimore, July 25, 1865. The owner of Ford's Theatre, John Thompson Ford (erroneously written "J. F. Ford" by the telegraph clerk) writes to Jonathan B. Wright, manager of Ford's Theatre on the night of the assassination. In full: "The Govt has taken over the theatre until after Congress meets. I have no hope to obtain it until Feby first." As it turns out, no plays were performed there until modern times. Small loss to upper right corner, two small paper remnants on verso from prior mounting. From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
