Description

[Abraham Lincoln Assassination] Post-Assassination Vigilante Broadside. Extraordinary 10.5" x 7.25" broadside or handbill issued on April 21, 1865 in Skaneateles, New York. Titled "Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Justice!," it was secretly distributed by members of a "Vigilance Committee" formed by outraged citizens determined to do their part in the apprehension of Booth and his accomplices should they attempt to escape northward to Canada. "This handbill is not to be posted in any public place, but is to be privately circulated into every household." Ironically, residents are instructed to examine their barns prior to retiring for the evening. Booth would eventually be captured and killed in a tobacco barn in Maryland. Excellent condition. It is the only example we have seen. From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
