Description
Thomas Jefferson: Bronze Portrait Medallion by Henry Kirke Brown. This bronze relief features Thomas Jefferson in profile, facing right. At the bottom portion beneath his shoulder are the artist's initials and last name with the date: "H.K. Brown. ;x ber [October] 1852." Housed in a gilt-wood frame measuring 16.25" x 16.125". The diameter of the relief measures 10". The back of the frame has a note affixed, listing the "Descendant of James T. Ames" for the provenance and stating the piece was cast by Ames Foundry, Chicopee, MA.After studying in Italy for four years, Henry Kirke Brown returned to America and made a name for himself, crafting beautiful sculptures from bronze. He is perhaps best known for his bronze sculpture George Washington installed in Union Square, New York City. His other bronze works include the Angel of the Resurrection in Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the DeWitt Clinton Memorial at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn; The Choosing of the Arrow, and more.
Condition: The portrait has a lovely brown patina. A crack is at the lower left edge near Jefferson's tied hair and another couple of cracks are at the lower right edge. A small chip is on the edge of the left side. The frame has some wear and light nicks. Property from the Cary M. Maguire Estate, Dallas, Texas.
