Description

Abraham Lincoln: Superlative Signed Carte-de-Visite. O-72, taken by Alexander Gardner in Washington, D.C. on August 9, 1863. Part of a Sunday "photo-shoot" that produced five different portraits (O-70 through 74). In this one, Lincoln holds a newspaper in one hand and his eyeglasses in the other. Gold ruled borders, blank verso with revenue stamp and remnants of a paper mounting hinge. The President has signed the CDV on the lower blank border: "A. Lincoln." The signature is bold and unmarred. There are some faint scratches in the blank "emulsion" above Lincoln's portrait, as well as slight wear to the corners. It is in very fine overall condition. Signed Lincoln photographs are "blue chip commodities" and are highly sought-after by collectors when they appear in the market, which is infrequently. We are honored to be able to offer two such pieces in this special "Lincoln & His Times" auction.
