Description

[Andrew Jackson]: Anti-Jackson Hand-Colored Cartoon Satire. A very rare cartoon titled "Machines For the New Pay-Tent Office" depicting various contraptions proposed to the "Pay-Tent" [patent] office for manufacture. An "Automaton Chess Player" allows the "white" man to remove the "red" man when assuming the position of the shaded figure (Andrew Jackson) in the foreground who appears in a hypnotic trance and ready to receive any deceptive suggestion. Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law in 1830 which forced a relocation of Native Americans intended to broaden existing states territories. Other clever creations are individually explained for their purpose and similarly negative impacts on government and the American people. Levi Woodbury and James K. Polk are among those depicted.

Condition: The hand-colored stone lithograph cartoon is 12.75" x 19", is loosely glued to a heavier stock paper backing and very likely can be successfully removed if one felt the need. Otherwise, minor dampstain here and there, but with great color and is visually extremely interesting!
