Description
George A. Custer: Carte de Visite [CDV]. This head-and-shoulders profile portrait of the ambitious general features a stoic expression and the officer's curly hair. The verso's text appears upside-down and reads, "Published by/ E. & H.T. Anthony,/ 501 Broadway,/ New York/ From Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery." The CDV measures 2.375" x 4", with a similar example of the original image by Mathew Brady listed in Katz's Custer in Photographs.Condition: Light toning and soiling. Three tiny abrasions are in the field: one at lower center, one to the right of Custer's shoulder, and one above his head. The portrait is not affected.
