Description

Daniel Webster: Dedication of Bunker Hill Monument Painting. 29" x 36" oil on canvas depicting Daniel Webster delivering a speech at the ceremonies marking the completion of the Bunker Hill Monument on June 17, 1843. He had appeared there in the same capacity when the cornerstone was laid eighteen years prior. He stands on the speaker's platform gesturing towards the completed monument before a vast multitude of onlookers. Not signed or dated, but likely made contemporaneously with the event by a skilled folk artist. An interesting "document" that gives us a glimpse into what many Americans considered a highlight of their lives... listening to a speech by one of the Republic's greatest orators and statesmen. No apparent restoration. Very good condition. Housed in a simple gilt wood frame.
