Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1836 Autograph Note Billing for Surveying Services Provided. 7.5" x 2.75" invoice in the hand of Abraham Lincoln, addressed to David McGinnis, Sangamon County official, charging $6 "To services as Road Supervisor." Dated 1836. McGinnis, like Lincoln, emigrated from Kentucky to Illinois. He was born in 1798 and died in 1867 after being thrown from a buggy by a runaway horse. After the failure of the Berry & Lincoln grocery in New Salem, Lincoln borrowed money to purchase a horse and surveying instruments. He landed a job as Deputy Surveyor, earning $3 a day. Unfortunately, his creditor obtained a judgment, seized the horse and instruments, and placed them at a sheriff's sale. Surprisingly, a friend ("Uncle Jimmy" Short) purchased them for $120 and presented them to Lincoln as a gift. A great artifact from early in his career when he still lived in New Salem. In fine condition. From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
