Description

George Washington: Pater Patriæ... the Holy Grail of GW Inaugural Buttons. Albert WI-19B, DeWitt GW-1789-41, 25 mm copper shell with lead-filled back. Half-length military bust of Washington facing one-quarter left or dexter. It is inscribed "General Washington Pater Patriæ". This is the only portrait button in the accepted canon of George Washington inaugural buttons and has always been at the top of the want list for anyone interested in the period. It may also be the earliest artifact that refers to Washington as the "Father of His Country." We sold one example (November 2015) which was weakly struck plus an example from the David & Janice Frent Collection, in February 2018. This example is well-struck with strong detail. There are certainly fewer than ten specimens in existence and likely closer to six or seven. This may be the finest example known. Even the example at Mt. Vernon, recently acquired, had a crack running through it. This is destined for a place of honor in any collection! From the Brook Mahoney Collection of George Washington Inaugural Buttons.
