Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: John Wilkes Booth Military Arrest Warrant. 8" x 9 ½" manuscript letter, written by an unknown clerk on behalf of J. W. Taylor, Chief of Staff and Assistant Adjutant General, to Col. George W. Gile, Commanding the 1st Brigade of the Veteran Reserve Corps. The order is dated the day of Lincoln's death, sent from "Headquarters Dept. Washington, 22nd Army Corps". In full: "The Maj. Genl. Comdg directs that you detail a Commissioned Officer and 10 Enlisted men to accompany each train which leaves this city for Baltimore April 15th. Directly after leaving the City the Officer in charge will search every car in the train and arrest if found John Wilkes Booth and other parties whom you may deem it for the interest of the service to apprehend. After each stopping place or station this search will be made. The parties will in each case return to Washington by the train leaving Baltimore first after its arrival there and carry out the same instructions on the return trip." Of course, Booth did not travel by train, so the searches, though necessary, bore no fruit. Endorsements dated April 26th and 28th ordering Lt. Morton Havens and ten men to proceed to Baltimore, signed by Col. Charles F. Johnson and Adjutant Frank N. Chase. Light soiling along right side and glue bleed-through at bottom. All avenues of investigation and pursuit were explored until the eventual capture and death of Booth at Garrett's Farm. This is an historically significant document and may be the earliest Booth arrest warrant extant.
