Description

1833 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge, Number 184. A convex diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 65mm x 68mm. There is no hallmark; John J. Lafar was the contractor for this year's badges. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" in a crescent-shaped bar punch (first * faint); "No" in a square punch (also faint) followed by an incuse "184" in individual punches; "MECHANIC" in a rectangular punch; and "1833" bar punched. Very fine with somewhat rough surfaces, dark brown patina. A pleasing example of a very rare occupation.
