[Abraham Lincoln]: Letters Written to the President. Eight [8] letters written to the President from various people, usually seeking appointments or favors of one sort or the other. 1) March 3rd 1865 letter from a little girl in Wilkes-Barre asking for a furlough for her brother (numerous endorsements including one dated the day of Lincoln's assassination), 2) February 2, 1861 letter of introduction for J. F. Daggett, one of the "... Commissioners chosen... to assist in securing the organization of the 'Territory of Idahoe' [sic]...", who wishes to report to the President on matters in that part of the country, 3) March 15th 1861 letter from a California man asking appointment as Consul to Smyrna which lists sixteen different letters of recommendation and endorsements from prominent citizens, such as Thaddeus Stevens, Col. Edward Baker and Leland Stanford (letters no longer present), 4) November 9th 1863 letter of introduction for William T. Lindsey from Mary Todd Lincoln's brother, L. B. Todd, adding "Aunt Betsy Todd left for the South on 3rd inst. Having your kind Passport", 5) March 26th 1861 letter asking for an appointment as Associate Justice from any of the territories signed by D. D. Driscoll of Chicago, 6) a February 21st 1863 letter from D. D. Driscoll now requesting appointment as Chief Justice of the Territory of Arizona, offering to supply references from Illinois politicians and newspaper editors, 7) a 3-page letter dated November 4, 1864 from the Presbyterian Synod of Cincinnati containing their resolutions "On the State of Our Country", urging support of the government, suppression of criticism and urging efforts to alleviate the suffering of Union soldiers held as prisoners of war, 8) March 6th 1863 letter recommending the appointment of Joseph E. Gary of Chicago as Judge in Arizona with an endorsement signed by two residents of the territory.Auction Info
