Description
Emancipation Proclamation: Bound Volume of General Orders. 5" x 7 ΒΌ" book titled: "General Orders. 1862. No. 101 to 217. War Department." The name of the owner is stamped in gold on the bottom of the spine, below the title: "General G. C. Strong. U. S. Vols." Strong was a specialist in ordnance and served on the staffs of Generals Irwin McDowell, George McClellan and Benjamin Butler. He commanded the first Union troops to land on Morris Island and was mortally wounded in the assault upon Fort Wagner. The book has a textured cloth cover with a ribbed leather spine and leather corners. Aside from some shelf-wear on the top and some abrasions to the back cover, it is in fine condition. It contains: General Order No. 89 (Death of President Van Buren), No. 101 (appointment of Henry Halleck as Chief of the Army), No. 139 (text of the Emancipation Proclamation), No. 141 (suspension of the writ of Habeas Corpus) and No. 173 (commuted death sentences). Order No. 141 subjected disloyal citizens and those attempting to undermine recruiting efforts to martial law and military tribunals. Order No. 139 is dated September 24, 1862 and contains the text of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which became official on January 1, 1863. As a bonus, we include a copy of Charles Eberstadt's 1950 reference work on the Emancipation Proclamation, a limited edition book signed by the author, still retaining its original glassine dust jacket.Auction Info
