FIRST EDITION of the first book by the father of modern science fiction, FIRST PRINTING with the first numerals dropped in the pagination of pages 247, 317, 337, and 342. In his ground-breaking work, Verne tells the story of Dr. Samuel Ferguson and his two associates (Dick Kennedy and Joe) who venture to Zanzibar in Africa. Ferguson aims to explore the part of Africa that the Barth and Burton and Speke expeditions were not able to reach, by using a balloon called the "Victoria."

Condition: Neatly rebacked to style, with endpapers renewed; small abrasions at head of spine; boards rubbed in a few spots; minor wear to extremities. Front flyleaf creased; some minor pale foxing.
